Gym equipment for Paediatric Musculoskeletal team

20 MARCH 2025

The Paediatric Musculoskeletal (MSK) team at York and Scarborough hospitals specialises in treating children and adolescents with conditions affecting bones, muscles, and joints. Their services aim to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life for young patients.

Lucy Eggleston, Paediatric Physiotherapist, explained: “We see a huge variety of patients within the Paediatric MSK team ranging from 0-16. The equipment York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity has funded will be invaluable to the majority of our patients.  The charity has funded a mini trampoline, a static bike, weights, kettle bell set, dumbbell rack, Reebok aerobic step, foam wobble cushion, a Plyobox, training ladder and mini hurdles.

“Some of the patients who will benefit from this equipment includes those with shoulder dislocations or instability, muscle strains, post-operative meniscus and ACL patients, generalised anterior knee, hip and back pain, chronic pain patients, ankle instability and post-fracture patients.

“All of these patients require unique and specific rehabilitation programmes and having access to the equipment will enhance the quality and quantity of exercises and treatment we can offer to best manage these patients and allow them to achieve the best outcomes.

“Some of our patients can struggle with their mental health, and even if they are able, are not confident to access a gym environment. Having access to safe and supportive space could be of the upmost importance in building positive thoughts and beliefs towards exercises.

"We know this equipment will be useful for all patients, as all the adult MSK facilities have access to the equipment and use them readily with their patients.”
